We had a chat to Joe from Floodlights and asked him a few questions as they came through our hometown and put on an amazing show at the Torquay pub:
What was the inspiration behind your latest track “Human”?
Sonically it’s a mix of alt rock with garage-punk undertones while lyrically it explores what forms our individual identity. It plays with the idea that perhaps we don’t have as much control as we think we do. Our passions and beliefs are a result of impressions left by different people throughout our lives that ultimately shape the choices we make and who we are.
Who is your favourite new aussie band or artist we should look out for?
I really like my friends, ‘The Mirrors’ – they’re great live too and are playing heaps in Melbourne at the moment, so I’d highly recommend getting down to see them play. The singer, Jay, has a beautiful voice and the songs are catchy with great melodies. The guitar work is so nice too.
If you had to pick one song to be stuck on repeat for the rest of your life what song what it be?
I’d choose Kiss kiss and Rhinestones by HTRK as it makes me feel super relaxed, and I reckon feeling like that for the rest of my life wouldn’t be the worst thing. I love listening to HTRK and have been lucky enough to see them play live a few times now. They capture the crowd so well to create a really intimate space and environment.
We have always loved the artwork with each of your releases, particularly “From a view” & “Backyard” is there a story behind the art work for these?
Thanks! Our friend Maddison Kitching did these. He’s an amazing artist and we felt that these paintings suited our EP and album. Check him out https://maddisonkitching.com/
Whats your Favourite album of all time?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience debut album ‘Are You Experienced’ (1967).
It’s such a timeless masterpiece. I remember listening to this as a kid around the house and being mind blown. It made me feel something that I hadn’t felt before. Wizardry behaviour by Jimi. I still revisit it every year at some point, and it still amazes me.
